Blastin' and Castin' in the Texas Outdoors

We havea lot of good times, the road was a drug when we started way back, our wheels rolled on steady, now its forgetting the race to find an open space and leaving that city far behind We’ll be up in the morning before the sun, since anything beats working on the job and everyone knows the early worm gets the fish. The world is your oyster, let the high times carry the low, walk where the sun is shining, lay your burdens down and think to yourself that it sure feels good feeling good again.

Public Lands Hunting Permit

This year the Public Land hunting permit is $48 This would allow dove hunting at two places near Mumford, lots of dovehunting in Milam county north of Cameron
Also this would include bow-only season for deer in Somerville and duck/goose hunting at somerville and a number of places near the coast

I am considering getting this permit. Does this seem like a good deal to anyone?

Aug 14-15th

I made a last minute decision to go fishing this weekend so I ended up flying solo. I arrived at sargent just after lunch time. There was a stiff breeze out of the east which completely screwed up the surf. Besides the big waves there was a long shore current. With enough weight I was able to keep lines out for an hour. Both baits were untouched so I packed up and went to the cut. There were 12 vehicles parked at the cut. Most people were lined up along the bank like salmon fisherman but a group of waders could be seen out in the cedar lakes. I filled up the bait bucket with minnows and waded across the cut and fished the opposite bank.

Right off the bat I get a good flounder bite. I let him have the bait for a few seconds and then I set the hook only to discover that my drag was backed all the way off. I didn’t get a backlash but the flounder took off in the opposite direction and when I cranked down on the drag the hook popped out. After that I caught two flounder along the bank. One was a fat 18” and the other was 15”. It got dark and I had to wade back across the gut in complete darkness. That was a little creepy. The group of waders that I could see in the distance came back with what looked like a pretty good stringer of slot reds.

The cut remained packed with people. They came and left all night. Several groups brought lights and generators but didn’t catch anything. The next morning I packed up and went for one more wade. I didn’t feel like screwing around with bait so I grabbed some lures and waded across the cut. I worked my way over to a grassy shore line and started throwing plastics. I managed to catch one flounder but I missed several and kicked two. They were not interested in plastic at all. I could also see redfish but couldn’t get them to bite either.

Anybody up for a Charter??

Since Steve hasn't posted this yet, I will do the honors. I'm hopin' to put together a deep sea charter trip in the first couple weeks of next month. If anyone has comments, questions, or suggestions, please contact Steve or myself.

Here's pics of the last charter I was on. It was in Florida, but my uncle and cousin are from Texas, so I thought maybe that would count. We caught a single amberjack, red and black grouper, and a whole mess of smaller snapper, grunt, and other species. What a tasty feast!

double hooking live bait / stinger hooks

When fishing walleyes up north they often short strike live bait. Meaning that they bite the tail off. I have seen this happen often with soft plastic baits here in the gulf.

To catch these short striking walleye the bait are often double hooked, once in the nose and a second small hook is used at the tail of the bait.

Likewise, when we were pursuing snapper they had a two hook system used on the bait fish. one up through the nose, the second hook attached to the eye of the first hook via a length of wire approximately the length of the bait. The hook was run through the bait where it laid flat against the body of the bait. I would say that they two hooks were aproximately equally successful at landing fish.

I know that most of the gulf's predatory fish are head strikers but Do you think that we might be able to increase our percentage of hookups by double hooking/adding stingers to our baits?

Circle hooks

circle hook

picture was taken 7-10-04

This is a mustad circle hook. I have been avoiding them because I think they are difficult to bait and if you do get a fish they are even harder to unhook. Because of the popularity of this style I decided to try it out. The jury is still out but if I catch a couple more like this then maybe I'll switch.

My favorite hook at the moment is the 8/0 gamakatsu circle hook. I think I will do a head to head comparison between the gamakasu and mustad.

What style do you guys prefer?

Your User Stats are pathetic

If ya'll would take the time to look at the user profiles on the left hand side there is a box called user stats.

I have made 20 posts with a total of 2350 words. Meanwhile Jefe has mustered a miniscule 3 posts for a laughable total of 37 words. At least brians three posts have added up to 944 words.

Todd from texas has only two posts and Todd from Michigan has sneakily hidden his profile but I know he was been a two-percenter as well

You should consider this somewhat of a call to action. Or a guess you could just consider how depressing it is that I expended 2350 words talking to myself.

P.S. it is monday and I don't have a ton of work to do today in the office
