Blastin' and Castin' in the Texas Outdoors

We havea lot of good times, the road was a drug when we started way back, our wheels rolled on steady, now its forgetting the race to find an open space and leaving that city far behind We’ll be up in the morning before the sun, since anything beats working on the job and everyone knows the early worm gets the fish. The world is your oyster, let the high times carry the low, walk where the sun is shining, lay your burdens down and think to yourself that it sure feels good feeling good again.

5/27 - 5/28

Around 2:00 on Friday afternoon my office mate Jeff declares, "I'm going home. I'm going to load up my jeep and drive to the coast. I'm going to build a bonfire, get drunk, and then fish all day saturday. Do you want to come?"

So after stopping to buy some fresh shad at the bait shop by the swing bridge, we arrived at the Sargent cut about an hour before dark. I threw plastics in the cut and landed two trout (one was legal). There were some other trout caught but it wasn't that many considering there were about 8 people fishing. We then moved to the surf and built a fire and set the rods out. We didn't catch anything that night but we were noticing a lot of crabs along the water's edge. We walked along the beach and picked up a bunch of nice blue crabs. Around midnight walking became difficult for me so we sat around the fire and drank some more.

On saturday morning I fished with cut shad. Nothing happened for the first 2.5 hours but then it turned on. We caught three bull reds in about 45 minutes.

A guy next to us caught a really nice red but that was all I saw.

The way I remember it..

Well, I’d like to say that I was the rootinist tootinist fish-slayinst feller on the whole third coast on that faithful weekend, however that honor goes to the man with the home field advantage…Brian (aka the guy who lost the roman candle war). I caught a flounder. I caught 3 whiting. I caught bait. And I caught a huge multifacited buzz. The prairie dogs didn’t work as well as I had planned, I believe, however, if these land dwellers had gotten out in the “good water” they may have done better. It is my firm belief that you gotta try something new from time to time. After all monotony is the mother of convention. (yes Steve that’s mine) I believe the quote of the week goes to Steve. “I cant drink now…I already drunk”
Thanks to those who showed as it was a good show. Looking foreward to the next big burn down fest, next time I fish hardcore, seriously...

Dinner or Bait?

Wayne sent me this picture of a trout he strung while wade fishing in the Sargent cut. I'll let him tell the story.

Beach party weekend

See what can happen when you put down the bottle and fish. We ended up with three slot reds on saturday (22, 25, & 27"). I also caught two flounder in the cut on sunday morning. I had a really good time. I hope we can do it again soon.

Call me Ahab...

Well boys, the pump has been primed. I'm not loaded up yet but things are laying about in the living room, organized by size, reorganized by weight, reorganized by importance, reorganized by chronological use, reorganized by color. Then scattered about whilst I was 5poople checking to see if there was anything I may have overlooked. I'm chompin at the bit boys, chompin at the bit. The weather is looking good, surf temp is in shape, wind is projected to begin slacking on thurs evening (that is as far ahead is I can get projections for) down to 5-10 mph. I built a disk cooker and we need to put some chark steaks and eggs in it. Is any one else getting anxious?

Sargent Recon

I did some reconnaissance at Sargent on sunday. I don't have much to report due to the 15-20 knot winds that were blasting the beach. Traffic was light and few people were even attempting to fish. Some people set up in the cut but nobody stayed long due to the lack of fish. The tide was ripping in and the wind was from the east. There was a small amount of weed but it is not the same stuff that plagued us last year.

I attempted to paddle my kayak but it was very difficult. I will bring it this weekend and hope for less wind.

The dirt road along the intercoastal was dry but there is water in some of the ruts. You still need to drive slow and pick your way around the bad sections but you can do it in 2wd. The beach was covered in wood.

The tides look good for this weekend. If the wind lay's down then we might actually catch fish.

Must Fish

Cant sleep, gotta catch bait in my mind, must fish...
